Creativity is not a talent for drawing. It is a set of cognitive skills every child can build.

The child who invents elaborate stories, redesigns every game's rules, or insists there is a better way to stack the blocks is showing more measurable creative skill than the child who colors neatly inside the lines. One is creative thinking. The other is fine motor control.

The three skills behind creative thinking

Creativity researchers have studied three distinct, measurable cognitive abilities in children. None of them require artistic talent. All of them can be nurtured or suppressed by the environment a child grows up in.

Divergent thinking
Generating many different ideas from a single starting point. The core of creative cognition.

Making something new by externalizing an idea, across any medium: words, blocks, movement, sound.

What-if thinking
Sustaining and developing an imaginative idea over time. Building a world, not just starting one.
Why this page does not focus on art
Art skills, including drawing ability, painting technique, and color sense, are real and worth developing. They are not what creativity researchers measure when they study creative development in children. Art is one medium through which creative thinking shows up. It is not the same thing as creative thinking, and a child's drawing ability tells you nothing reliable about their creative cognitive capacity.
1. Divergent thinking

Researchers measure creativity in four ways. None involve a pencil.

Since Guilford's foundational work in the 1950s, researchers have assessed divergent thinking using tasks like "list every possible use for a brick." The child who says only "building" scores differently from the child who says "building, weapon, doorstop, raft, pillow, placeholder, bookend, stepping stone, paperweight." Both answers come from the same four cognitive dimensions.
Fluency
How many ideas
"I can think of twenty things you could do with a cardboard box"
The total number of responses. The starting point for all other dimensions.
Flexibility
How different the ideas are
"A rocket, a bed, a shop, a cave, and a swimming pool."
How many distinct categories the ideas span. More variety signals more flexible thinking.
Originality
How unusual the ideas are
"A time machine. A portal to another planet. A house for very small dragons."
Ideas that few or no other children generate. The dimension most closely linked to creative achievement.
Elaboration
How developed each idea is
"A submarine, with a periscope on one end and a porthole you can see through."
The amount of detail added to each response. Marks the difference between an idea and an idea built out.
2. Creative expression

Building and making
Constructing novel structures from available materials. Engineering by instinct.
Storytelling
Inventing characters, plots, and worlds through words. Verbal creative output.
Role and dramatic play
Creating rules, roles, and scenarios in play. Collaborative world-building.
Sound and movement
Inventing songs, rhythms, or new games that involve the body and sound.
Inventing and redesigning
Proposing alternative ways something could work. “What if we changed the rules?”
Visual art

One medium among several. Not a proxy for creative skill on its own.

A child who cannot draw but who invents elaborate stories, redesigns every game they encounter, or builds complex structures is not uncreative. They are expressing the same underlying cognitive skill through a different medium.
3. What-if thinking

Starting an imaginary idea is one skill. Sustaining it is another.

Imaginative elaboration, the capacity to develop a creative idea over time rather than just initiate one, builds steadily across childhood and produces qualitatively different thinking at each stage.
2 to 3 years

"I'm a dog. Woof."

Simple role adoption. A single idea, briefly held. The imaginative scenario starts and ends in the same moment.
3 to 5 years

"I'm a dog and I live in that house and you have to bring me food or I'll bark."

The scenario gains rules, a setting, and a relationship. It sustains across several minutes of play.
5 to 7 years

"What if every building in the city was actually a spaceship and nobody knew? Where would they go? Who would find out first?"

The what-if generates implications, characters, and a chain of consequences. The child tracks multiple threads simultaneously.
7 to 10 years

"I'm writing a series. There are seven books and the main character doesn't know she has a twin until book four."

Extended narrative planning. The imagined world has internal consistency, a timeline, and consequences that carry across sessions.
4. Pragmatics

Talking is only half of communicating

A child can have perfect grammar and a large vocabulary and still struggle to hold a conversation. Pragmatics is the social layer, and it has its own timeline.
9 months
Joint attention begins
Babies start pointing and following a caregiver's gaze, the earliest building block of shared conversation.
3 to 4 years
Turn-taking and topic maintenance
Children hold a back-and-forth exchange, stay on topic for a few turns, and start to repair misunderstandings.
Around 6 years
Irony and perspective-taking
Understanding that someone might mean the opposite of what they said becomes possible for the first time.
8 to 10 years
Jokes, sarcasm, social nuance
Inside jokes, teasing, and reading a room's mood become part of how a child connects with peers.

Why it happens at this age specifically
Around age 8 to 10, logical and conventional thinking becomes fully functional, and children become acutely aware of how others might judge their ideas. They begin to self-censor. Research describes it clearly: children's actions become motivated by calculations of how they might give rise to disapproval. The social cost of an unusual idea, one that might get laughed at, starts to outweigh the reward of generating it.
What this means in practice
A child who offers fewer unusual ideas at age 9 than at age 6 is not becoming less creative. They are becoming more socially aware, and in an environment where unusual ideas are not safe, they stop generating them. The cognitive capacity is intact. The willingness to express it is what changes, and that willingness is directly shaped by how the people around them respond.
What actually helps

The research on what preserves creative thinking is consistent

Open-ended materials, responses that take unusual ideas seriously, and environments where there is no single right answer are the primary protective factors for divergent thinking.
Closed-ended tasks
Activities with one correct answer
Worksheets, coloring books, and step-by-step instructions build accuracy. They do not build divergent thinking.
Evaluating first
Reacting to the quality of the idea
A child who hears “that’s a weird idea” learns to not generate the next one out loud.
Open-ended materials
Things that become whatever the child decides
Blocks, clay, sand, blank paper, cardboard boxes. Materials with no intended use produce more divergent responses than materials with one.
Premature praise on outcome
Praising the product, not the process
Research shows process praise (“I love how many different ways you tried”) builds creative persistence better than outcome praise (“that’s a beautiful drawing”).

Ask "what else could it be?"

After any first answer, asking for more develops fluency. There is never only one right answer to a creative prompt.

Take unusual ideas seriously

"That's an interesting idea, tell me more" does more to preserve creative risk-taking than any specific activity.

Protect unstructured time

Divergent thinking requires idleness. A child who is always scheduled has fewer opportunities for the wandering that generates novel connections.

Offer open-ended questions at bedtime

"What if you could only eat one color of food?" is a divergent thinking exercise that feels like play and costs nothing.

Notice the medium, not just the output

If your child's creativity shows up in stories, games, or structures rather than drawings, recognize it explicitly. What gets named gets repeated.

At age five, most children demonstrate high divergent thinking. By age ten, in most school and social environments, that same capacity measures significantly lower. The environment changed, not the child.

Creativity is not fixed at birth. It is shaped by what happens to the ideas a child generates when they share them.
