1. Number

Counting builds in four small stages

Inside this one skill, four distinct stages arrive in a fixed order. Saying numbers, matching them to objects, and knowing what the final count means are genuinely separate abilities.6 months

Quantity recognition
Babies begin to notice that one group has more items than another, long before they have any number words.
Around age 2
Rote counting
Reciting "one, two, three" from memory, often out of order or with numbers skipped. This is memorized rhythm, not yet real counting.
Around age 3
One-to-one correspondence
Touching one object for each number word said. The bridge between reciting numbers and actually counting things.
Ages 2 to 4
Cardinality
Understanding that the last number counted is the total. Counting five blocks and knowing there are five, not just having said "five" last.
2. Number Relations

"More than" is easier than "comes after"

Comparing quantities and ordering numbers feel similar to adults, but research shows children master them at different rates, and one is genuinely harder.

"Which has more?"
Magnitude language like bigger, smaller, more, and less is understood earlier and more reliably.

"What comes after six?"
Ordinal language like before and after takes longer, especially for numbers that are not next to each other.
What this means in practice
child who confidently says "I have more cookies than you" may still struggle with "what number comes after seven." That gap is normal and expected, not a sign one skill is behind.
3. Number Operations

Why finger counting is a sign of progress, not a problem

Many parents worry that a child still counting on their fingers in kindergarten is falling behind. The research says close to the opposite.
The path to mental math
Children who count on their fingers efficiently in kindergarten are more likely to have moved past the strategy entirely by second grade. Finger counting is the scaffold, not the obstacle.

What about shapes, patterns, and spatial reasoning?

Geometry, measurement, and pattern recognition are real and important parts of early math, and research treats them as a related but separate skill set from number sense itself. They show up throughout this site's activities and guides, but they follow their own developmental path rather than being a fourth strand of the three skills above.

Math is already in your day, before any flashcard

Researchers consistently find that everyday, embedded math talk builds number sense more reliably than dedicated math time with worksheets or apps.

Stairs, snacks, toys. The object does not matter, the repetition does.

Ask "how many" and wait

Let your child actually count rather than answering for them.

Use comparison words often

"You have more grapes than me" builds number relations naturally, in passing.

Let fingers do the work

Encourage finger counting for addition and subtraction. It is a strategy, not a shortcut to discourage.

Narrate splitting and combining

"Three cookies, if I give you one, I have two left" builds operations before any worksheet does.

Number sense in infancy predicts standardized math scores three years later, before a single lesson is taught.

Preverbal number sense at six months old has been shown to predict measured math ability at age three and beyond.
