Then I came across a study where researchers trained four- and six-year-olds for five days and measured real, physical changes in how their brains handled focus afterward. Attention control in children turns out to be far less fixed than the way we usually talk about it.

One study the researchers describe gives a clear picture of when executive attention starts to show up. Children sat in front of two response keys and were rewarded for responding to a picture’s identity, not its location on the screen, a setup that creates conflict between two competing responses. Twenty-four-month-olds tended to perseverate, sticking with a single response regardless of what the task asked for. Thirty-six-month-old children performed at high accuracy, but like adults, responded more slowly and less accurately on the trials where the competing response pulled against the correct one.
That’s a twelve-month window, roughly age two to age three, where conflict-resolution attention seems to switch on. It’s also worth knowing where this ability levels off: performance on this kind of conflict-resolution task stays about the same from age eight all the way into adulthood. Most of the developmental distance a child will ever cover on this specific skill happens before age eight, not after.
That detail surprised me more than almost anything else in this research. I’d assumed attention kept improving steadily all the way through the school years and into adolescence. For this particular conflict-resolution skill, the researchers found the climb is mostly finished by age eight. Whatever’s happening between age two and age eight is doing the bulk of the work this system will ever do.
Here’s the finding that reframed everything for me. Posner and Rothbart’s research team brought four- and six-year-olds into a lab for sessions lasting about forty minutes, spread across five days over two to three weeks. The exercises had nothing to do with sitting still or being told to focus. Children practiced controlling a character’s movement with a joystick, predicting where an object would travel based on its trajectory, and holding information in mind for short matching tasks, exercises built around resolving conflict, the exact skill the executive attention network handles.
After only five days, the trained children showed a measurable improvement in nonverbal intelligence test scores compared to children who hadn’t done the training. Brain recordings taken during testing showed the region associated with executive attention shifting to look more like the pattern typically seen in adults. Five days. Forty minutes at a time. That is not the timeline of a fixed trait. That’s the timeline of a trainable skill responding to practice.
I’m not signing my son up for a research lab, and this isn’t a case for drilling attention exercises at home. What it changed is how I interpret a hard day of focus. When he can’t stick with a task, I read it now as one data point about one network, on one day, that happens to be trainable and still under construction, not evidence about who he is or a fixed report card on his attention overall.
It’s also worth knowing that genes play a real role here too, more for the executive network than the other two. Twin studies the researchers describe found strong heritability for executive attention, some heritability for orienting, and none detectable for alerting. That doesn’t contradict the training finding. It means genes set part of the starting point, and experience still moves the needle from there, which is a more accurate and more useful picture than either pure destiny or pure effort.

According to Posner and Rothbart’s (2007) review in the Annual Review of Psychology, attention is better understood as three separate, trainable networks instead of one fixed trait. Posner and Rothbart describe an alerting network that achieves and maintains readiness for incoming information, an orienting network that selects what to focus on among competing information, and an executive network that resolves conflict between competing thoughts or responses. These three systems have distinct brain anatomy, rely on different neurochemicals, and do not correlate with each other, meaning a child can be strong in one and unremarkable in another.
Research described in Posner and Rothbart’s review found that children around 24 months old tended to perseverate on a single response regardless of task demands, while children around 36 months old performed with high accuracy, similar to adults, on tasks requiring them to resolve conflict between competing responses. Performance on this type of conflict-resolution task then remains fairly stable from around age eight into adulthood.
Evidence described in this research suggests yes, at least for executive attention. A study involving four- and six-year-olds who completed five days of specific attention-focused exercises found measurable improvements in nonverbal intelligence test scores and changes in brain activity patterns following training, compared to children who did not receive the training.
Attention that varies from day to day, strong sometimes and scattered other times, reflects the normal, uneven development of several separate systems and is not typically a cause for concern. It’s worth raising with your pediatrician if attention difficulties are severe, consistent across multiple settings, and interfering with daily functioning well beyond what’s typical for your child’s age.
