Three Kindergarten Skills Predict Success. Behavior Is Not One.

I spent a chunk of my son’s kindergarten year privately worried about the wrong thing. He’d had a rough patch, some tears at drop-off, a few days where he wouldn’t sit still for circle time, and I assumed that was the piece most likely to derail him academically down the line. Then I found the actual school readiness research on what predicts later success, and behavior problems at kindergarten entry weren’t anywhere near the top of the list.

School Readiness Research: What Six Large Studies Found

Economist Greg Duncan and eleven co-authors brought together data from six large longitudinal studies, nearly thirty-six thousand children altogether, to compare what measured at kindergarten entry predicted reading and math achievement years later. Their meta-analysis, published in Developmental Psychology in 2007, ran the comparison the same way across every study: school-entry math skills, reading skills, attention-related skills, and socioemotional behavior, all measured against the same later outcomes.

The order that emerged surprised me. Early math skills had the strongest predictive power of everything measured. Reading skills came second. Attention-related skills came third, still a real and independent predictor, but not the strongest one. Socioemotional behavior, the piece I’d been most worried about, was generally not a significant predictor of later academic achievement at all, and that held true even among children who already showed relatively high levels of behavior problems at the starting line.

The researchers designed their comparison carefully, controlling for cognitive and attention skills measured before kindergarten entry along with a wide range of family background factors, so the comparison wasn’t picking up on which families had more resources overall. Even with those controls in place, the ranking held: math first, reading second, attention third, socioemotional behavior a consistent non-predictor of later academic achievement specifically.

Why This Surprised Me More Than The Math Finding Did

I expected math and reading to matter. What I didn’t expect was how consistently behavior problems failed to predict later academic trouble, across six separate studies run in different places with different samples. A child who struggles with emotional regulation or attention at drop-off isn’t thereby flagged for academic difficulty down the line, at least not according to this body of evidence. The researchers were explicit that this held even among children with elevated levels of problem behavior, not only children with mild or occasional struggles.

That doesn’t mean behavior and emotional skills don’t matter for other things, friendships, classroom climate, a child’s own daily experience of school. It means that specifically for predicting later reading and math achievement, the skills that mattered most were the academic and attention skills a child brought with her, not how she behaved.

Where Attention Fits Into This Picture

Attention skills still earned their place on this list, though not at the top of it. A child’s ability to sustain focus and follow along at kindergarten entry independently predicted later achievement, even after math and reading skills were accounted for separately. That’s worth knowing, because it means attention isn’t a proxy for academic skill on its own, a kid who happens to already read well isn’t automatically the same kid who can sit through a lesson. It’s measuring something real and additional. A later replication of this same comparison, using a large Canadian dataset, confirmed the same basic ranking for the academic and attention skills: math strongest, then reading and attention. The replication confirmed the socioemotional finding too: like the original study, socioemotional behaviors did not significantly predict later math and reading achievement in the Canadian sample. The surprising finding about behavior held up on a second, independent look, not only the academic ranking.

What this told me is that all three, math, reading, and attention, deserve real attention heading into kindergarten, but in that order of weight, not with attention or behavior automatically assumed to matter more than the academic pieces.

What This Changes For A Parent Of A Kindergartner

This reframed where I put my energy that year. Instead of treating the rough drop-offs and the fidgety circle time as the main event, I put more attention into ordinary numeracy and reading exposure at home, counting things together, reading regularly, noticing numbers in the world, while still supporting him through the harder emotional mornings without treating them as the central predictor of how he’d do academically.

It also gave me something to say to myself on the hard mornings: a rough patch with attention or emotions at five does not carry the same predictive weight I’d assumed it did. The academic groundwork mattered more, and that groundwork is built through ordinary, low-key exposure, not dramatic intervention.

When This Is The Ordinary Spread Of Kindergarten, And When It Is Worth A Mention

For most children, some inconsistency in attention, some hard mornings, and normal variation in early math and reading exposure are all part of an ordinary kindergarten year, not a fixed trajectory.
